New Year, New Career?

Everyone seems to be updating their LinkedIn profiles and calling in favours for recommendations from contacts right now. Time to make your CV stand out in a crowd. So, what type of CV should you go for?
Should you use a performance, functional or targeted CV? I would say it depends on the type of role you are looking to land.
Better the devil you know? The Performance CV
If you are looking to stay in a similar position within your industry, the performance one is the best.
Showing all your work experience in chronological order starting from the most recent position you have held if you have worked recently in companies that are well known in your field is the way to go. Bullet-point your duties to make them stand out from the page and incorporate achievements at the bottom of each role.
Fancy a change? The Functional CV
If you want to change career direction, have gaps in your employment history or you've had a lot of jobs, you want to describe the experience you've got as a whole in a functional CV.  In a functional CV you promote your skills and achievements in three to six functional headings.  For example, if you're applying for a marketing role, then headings could include Communication Skills and Campaigns Organised for example.
Overcome the competetion? The Targeted CV
In an ever competitive candidate flooded market, however, the targeted CV can be the strongest.
This is a compelling type of CV as it's tailored to a specific position or role and can be very effective.  You do not change your history; just slant everything towards the type of role you are seeking and, ideally you would take your cues from an advert or job spec to highlight similarities.  This is more time consuming as you have to amend it per se but your efforts will pay off.
Happy Job Hunting.
